2018 Upper Midwest Woodcarvers and Quilt EXPO

On August 10, 11 and 12, Blue Earth will welcome a host of carvers and quilters in the 35th Annual Woodcarvers and Quilt EXPO to be held in Unity Hall at Blue Earth Area High School. Hours of the EXPO are 4-8 pm on Friday, 10 am-5 pm on Saturday, and noon-4 pm on Sunday. Adult admission is only $5; children under 12 are admitted free. A three day pass is $8. An Opening Night reception is scheduled for Friday from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm with complimentary beverage and snacks for all attendees.

The featured Quilter for this year’s EXPO is Julie Post of Titonka, Iowa, who is well known for her many humorous quilts, including her famous “Captain A-moo-ica.” Julie has displayed quilts in the EXPO for many years. Special guest Terry Atkinson – Minnesota quilting legend – will present a lecture and trunk show at 2:00 pm on Saturday. This trunk show is generously sponsored by Heartland Embroidery of Blue Earth, Calico Hutch Quilt Shop of Hayward, and Old Alley Quilt Shop of Sherburn. There will be a number of special displays – a series of quilts inspired by the Navajo Code Talkers will be displayed, as well as a dozen quilts by the Block Swappers. This year’s exchange was a pair of red-white-and-blue blocks. The carving contact for the EXPO is Bruce Ankeny.

Local quilters will be presenting ongoing demonstrations throughout the EXPO. The popular EXPO Walking Tours will return again. Hundreds of woodcarvings and quilts will be on display. Quilt supplies can be purchased from vendors, and quilters and non-quilters alike can purchase any number of lovely items from the Quilt Boutique. There will be People’s Choice winners for the displayed quilts. Quilts in the “Wonderful Watermelon” challenge will also be displayed. The annual EXPO Challenge is sponsored by CCF Bank in Blue Earth – where the entries will be displayed for a month following the EXPO.

The EXPO is under the sponsorship of the Blue Earth Valley Quilters and local woodcarvers. The local chapter of PEO will be serving food on Saturday and Sunday at the EXPO. Don’t miss this unique display of hundreds of carvings and quilts all under one roof at the 35th Annual Upper Midwest Woodcarvers and Quilt EXPO.
